My Voice & Testimony

From the life of a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

Why I Blog

with one comment

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and worthily hold a current temple recommend. Many refer to us by our nickname, “the mormons”. Stereotypes of all shapes and sizes seem to go with that. Whatever your opinion may be, I hope this blog may give you a better perspective of who we are, what we believe, and how we live. I’m certainly far from perfect, but I hope to be sincere in my message and voice to the world.

The good news.

The scriptures make reference to the theme “good news” which relates to the gospel of Jesus Christ. The message that through his atoning sacrifice all mankind has been redeemed from our fallen state to return to our Father in Heaven. Through the restored gospel, this good news gets even better. Through revealed truths from living prophets, called by God upon the earth today, we now have more truth and knowledge than in any other dispensation. We now know who we are, why we are here, and what our true potential is and it all started w/ Joseph Smith in 1820.

Joseph Smith was called by God to open up the dispensation of the fullness of times. At age 14, He saw God the Father and His son Jesus Christ as two separate beings.

“After I had retired to the place where I had previously designed to go, having looked around me, and finding myself alone, I kneeled down and began to offer up the desires of my heart to God. I had scarcely done so, when immediately I was aseized upon by some power which entirely overcame me, and had such an astonishing influence over me as to bind my tongue so that I could not speak. Thick bdarkness gathered around me, and it seemed to me for a time as if I were doomed to sudden destruction. But, exerting all my powers to acall upon God to deliver me out of the power of this enemy which had seized upon me, and at the very moment when I was ready to sink into bdespair and abandon myself to destruction—not to an imaginary ruin, but to the power of some actual being from the unseen world, who had such marvelous power as I had never before felt in any being—just at this moment of great alarm, I saw a pillar of clight exactly over my head, above the brightness of the dsun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me. It no sooner appeared than I found myself adelivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me Ibsaw two cPersonages, whose brightness and dglory defy all description, estanding above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My fBeloved gSon. Hear Him! My object in going to ainquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right (for at this time it had never entered into my heart that all were wrong)—and which I should join. I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all awrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those bprofessors were all ccorrupt; that: “they ddraw near to me with their lips, but theirehearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the fcommandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the gpower thereof.” JSH 15-19

He was also visited by the angel Moroni who directed him to uncover sacred records written upon gold plates. Joseph Smith translated these plates into what we know as the Book of Mormon.

Under God’s direction, the keys of the priesthood were conferred upon Joseph by John the Baptist, Peter, James, & John; which directs the affairs of man on earth with the authority. Having the authority to act in the name of God separates a prophet as the mouthpiece of the Lord from those whom have the most sincere attempt to interpret God’s will. This same priesthood authority that was given to Adam, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and now Joseph Smith in this last dispensation or the 7th seal which is recorded in John of the Bible. John the beloved as recorded, saw in vision during this dispensation the angel Moroni declaring this good news:

And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters. Rev. 14:6-7

Who would be bold enough to make such claims! Is there any religion that would so boldly claim such authority and revealed truth, fearing God’s judgement? Who would dare unless it were the truth! Joseph Smith in fact died as a martyr for this great cause, sealing his testimony with his own blood:

Joseph Smith, the aProphet and bSeer of the Lord, has done more, csave Jesus only, for the salvation of men in this world, than any other man that ever lived in it. In the short space of twenty years, he has brought forth the Book of Mormon, which he translated by the gift and power of God, and has been the means of publishing it on two continents; has sent the dfulness of the everlasting gospel, which it contained, to the four quarters of the earth; has brought forth the revelations and commandments which compose this book of Doctrine and Covenants, and many other wise documents and instructions for the benefit of the children of men; gathered many thousands of the Latter-day Saints, founded a great city, and left a fame and name that cannot be slain. He lived great, and he died great in the eyes of God and his people; and like most of the Lord’s anointed in ancient times, has sealed his mission and his works with his own ebloodD&C 135:3

Joseph Smith was succeed by a continued line of priesthood authority. Like Joseph; each prophet was called of God, chosen by revelation, and supported by 12 apostles. Jeffrey R Holland, one of the 12 apostles living today (under the prophet Thomas S Monson), shared this talk during the October 2009 General Conference in regards to Joseph Smith’s martyrdom and truthfulness of the Book of Mormon (watch the video below or read the full discourse here.

Again how could we be so bold!? Even so the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, does so, and boldly moves forward, as prophesied in the Old Testament:

Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, that no aplace was found for them: and the bstone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth. Daniel 2: 35

God’s church has been restored in these latter-days.

The latter-day kingdom of God (referenced as the stone above) will fill the whole earth. The same church that was established in other dispensations of time has been restored. The same gospel and church established by Jesus Christ and his apostles when they were on the earth has been restored. The Old Testament has testified of this day, the New Testament has testified of this day, as well as the Book of Mormon: all scripture has testified that this day would come and we know the Lord will surely return in his second coming.

How exciting is this good news! My hope is that my voice and testimony through this blog will reach a few ears who are willing to humbly search this out for themselves and ask God.

In addition to prayer, the best way to learn for yourself is to simply read the Book of Mormon (request a free copy of the Book of Mormon here or read now online here), ponder it and pray over its message. If the Book of Mormon is true – if it really is scripture, then Joseph Smith was speaking the truth. If Joseph Smith was speaking the truth, we also know he saw God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ. And if that is true, we know he was called of God to usher in this dispensation with all the keys and authority from God. The Book of Mormon ends with this promise from Moroni:
Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how amerciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and bponder it in your chearts. And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would aask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not btrue; and if ye shall ask with a csincere heart, with dreal intent, having efaith in Christ, he will fmanifest the gtruthof it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may aknow the btruth of all things. And whatsoever thing is good is just and true; wherefore, nothing that is good denieth the Christ, but acknowledgeth that he is. And ye may aknow that he is, by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore I would exhort you that ye deny not the power of God; for he worketh by power, baccording to the faith of the children of men, the same today and tomorrow, and forever. Moroni 10:3-7

  1. […] Again God select his prophets and leaders.  We can certainly study and live the gospel in faith as we prepare, but the opportunity and call from the Lord – has to be from the Lord.  Even more, chosen by the Lord.  Following this teaching that is as old as this earth and eternity, is God’s way – not man’s.  Through revelation, God has called a prophet in our day.
